Sarah, a high school student currently staying at the Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS) shelter due to unlivable conditions at home, was referred to HELP by an Edmonton Police Service constable.
Sarah shared the challenges she was facing and the type of support she felt would be most helpful. With support from HELP, Sarah met with her school’s guidance counselor, school resource officer, and the administrative staff. Together, they adjusted her class schedule in a way that better suits her current situation.
Sarah also received a bus pass and clothing from HELP to ease daily barriers and enable her to focus on school. She is now connected to a social worker through her high school who is walking alongside her as she explores long-term housing options and potential subsidies.
