Lucas reconnects with his family

DMU (Detainee Management Unit) HELP met with Lucas, who is living with learning disabilities combined with ODD, ADHD, bipolar disorder & schizophrenia. As a result, Lucas finds it incredibly difficult to navigate support systems or even ask for help.

Frustrated, exhausted, and isolated, Lucas explained how he lost contact with his mother, who resides in Nova Scotia. HELP was able to connect with Lucas’ father, who unfortunately didn’t have Lucas’ mother’s phone number but had an email address for her.

A response to the email was received within 15 minutes and Lucas was able to reconnect with his mother.

Once Lucas was released from the Edmonton Remand Centre, HELP arranged for his flight back to Nova Scotia to be reunited with his mother.

After an hour-long meeting with the DMU HELP Navigator, Lucas went from feeling frustrated to genuinely grateful.
