Oliver’s Story

Edmonton City Parole contacted the HELP Team regarding Oliver’s immediate release from the Remand Center, as he was at risk of houselessness after losing his housing due to unemployment. The parole officer asked if HELP could assist in reconnecting Oliver with his previous housing team, which he had worked well with.

HELP met with Oliver, who set four goals during his time with the HELP program: housing, employment, obtaining a leisure access pass and mental health supports. Oliver understood that to be successful in the HELP program, he had to demonstrate commitment through consistent action, but also that support was in place to ensure he was set up for success.

Contact was made with the Housing Manager at the Mustard Seed to explore the possibility of re-engaging with Oliver as a client. The Housing Manager expressed immediate interest in assisting Oliver and agreed to reopen the file without delay, ensuring a smooth transition back into the support system. The Mustard Seed aided in outstanding rent arrears, a damage deposit and the first month of rent to place a unit on hold for the month of July.

Oliver has also been connected to mental health support which he attends regularly and has obtained a leisure access pass. HELP also provided Oliver with information on employment resources, including organizations in Edmonton that help with resume building and job searches. Within the past four months, Oliver successfully completed all four of his identified goals. As a result, he has been formally deselected from the program, with appropriate long-term supports now in place to ensure continued stability and progress.
