The HELP team responded to the High-level Bridge where a man in his 40s said he was feeling overwhelmed, in need of help, hopeless but not suicidal. Michael said he wasn’t from Edmonton and felt alone and stressed. He was hearing voices and admitted he had thought about jumping but didn’t want to hurt himself. He just needed help.
The HELP Navigator talked with Michael about resource options and asked him if he wanted to go to a shelter, which he agreed to. The HELP Team brought him to the Herb Jamieson Centre for some sleep, to have a meal, and a shower.
HELP also contacted the Hope Mission Cultural support team to follow up with Michael on Monday about getting his mental health medications set up and, potentially, a bus ticket back home to Saskatchewan.
HELP also showed him where he can go to get a bed, shower access, and where the meals & income/housing support is located if he decides to stay in town. The HELP Navigator said: “When we arrived on scene the bridge was all blocked off with FIRE/ EMS/ EPS on scene. It was great to be able to offer a solution that made Michael feel safe and offer some hope to him, as well as freeing up the city services that were there for him that could now be redirected elsewhere.”
